The State of the Star Wars Galaxy in 2025

It is an interesting time for Star Wars and the Star Wars RPG. Here are a few musings.

  • I started this blog in 2013, when the Edge of the Empire game from Fantasy Flight Games was brand new. For years it gave me an outlet for my Star Wars RPG creativity. I also enjoyed seeing others share their own supplements, scenarios and other projects on the FFG message boards--and there was a lot of content created.
  • Like all good things, however, this eventually came to an end. FFG fleshed out their three (three!) separate lines for the RPG, with a few adventure books, a supplement book for each class, and some odds and ends by the time all was said and done. Then Asmodee/Edge Studio acquired the rights for the RPG, and it's been on hiatus ever since then. That means no new content in almost five years.
  • My buddy Brent and I even started a new blog, Tierfon Campaign, with the dream of running the Age of Rebellion RPG, and X-Wing and Legion miniatures games to create sprawling and glorious adventures.
  • The Star Wars movies have had their ups and downs in that time, too. Back in 2013, Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm was not yet completed. Within a year, though, it happened. Decades of previous content were deemed "Legends" material and dropped from the canon. The tradeoff was growing excitement for new live-action movies, but they proved to be a mixed bag. I enjoyed The Force Awakens quite a bit, and loved Rogue One. On the other hand, I did not care for The Last Jedi. I think some of the fallout from that affected Solo, which did not do well at the box office. The Rise of Skywalker kept me entertained, but by then I was feeling burnt out on the Sequel Trilogy.
  • One complaint, from the point of view of an RPG enthusiast, is that the sequel trilogy lacked the room for playing that the Original Trilogy had. By the end of The Last Jedi, the Resistance has been decimated. It feels very much like Rey and Kylo Ren are the focus, and the other characters' activities aren't much more than background noise. Lando shows up with reinforcements at the end of Episode IX, but that happens very quickly and isn't explained except in a supplementary novel.
  • On the small screen, however, business has been booming. I loved The Mandalorian and Andor, as did a lot of other people. I also enjoyed The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi. I'm not entirely sure about Ahsoka, but want to see where the story goes. I even enjoyed The Acolyte, and think it deserved better than the review bombing it received from angry Internet trolls.
  • That makes a nice segue into The High Republic. When it was announced, I thought I'd give it a try.  I enjoyed the first novel well enough, and the comics were pretty good. Two factors hindered my engagement, however. One is real life factors such as having a kid, which limits the time I have for reading and money I want to spend on comics. The other is that, for me, the Rebellion Era is the time period in which I want to play Star Wars
  • In two years we'll have the 50th Anniversary of Star Wars. I hope that, by then, Lucasfilm will channel some energy into the time period of the Original Trilogy. As the High Republic publishing project draws to a close, they should have some room on the schedule.
  • Two years ago my gaming group surprised me by choosing to play Star Wars. For years we'd had a steady diet of Pathfinder and Savage Worlds, and had recently started playing Dungeons & Dragons 5e. In the fall of 2023, however, they opted for Star Wars and then choosing the old D6 System! I took a series of scenarios that I'd written for Age of Rebellion and adapted them. None of us had played this version of the game in more than twenty years, but we had fun! We ran into more real-life issues that had us put the campaign on hold rather than finishing it, and so those characters are still ready and waiting...
  • Finally, this summer I've been reading the novel Star Wars: Battlefront: Twilight Company. I've been enjoying it more than I expected, and will give it its own post once I've finished it. Reading that novel, too, gives me a hankering for some good old-fashioned Rebellion-era fighting the good fight.
As of now, I'm spending some time revising the Tierfon Campaign scenarios for use with the D6 System, and we'll see how it goes from there.

Star Wars Galaxy Map

This page surprised me while I was perusing the Star Wars website. I'm posting the link here so that it's easier for me to find in the future. I am interested in comparing it to others from the RPGs to see what is consistent and what has changed.

More Resources for the d6 Star Wars RPG

Recently I've been running the eponymous Tierfon Campaign scenarios from my other Star Wars RPG blog, but adapting them for use with the old D6 System from West End Games. In doing so, I've found two more excellent resources, this time ones that provide converted and/or homebrew stats. There's been a lot of new material in the Star Wars Universe since the late 90s, and these sites are proving to be immensely helpful.

Lucasfilm Lofi

I am still pretty new to this whole lofi thing. I've been on the lookout for chill background music to play in my classroom, however, and found a few things that seem to work well. In doing so, I also found a number of Lucasfilm Lofi clips on Youtube, such as this one for Life Day. It's good stuff to play in the background while reading or writing.

Second Trailer for Andor Series

Here's a new trailer for the Andor series. This one provides more information about the plot. Sadly, it looks like the premiere has been pushed back three weeks from when it was originally intended.

Trailer for Andor Series

Here's the first full trailer for the upcoming series, Andor. I must say that while I liked Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett, and have loved both seasons of The Mandalorian, Andor is the show that seems like it can best capture the spirit of the Star Wars RPG for me. It promises to have mostly new characters, so anything can happen to them during the course of the series. What is more, it will focus on the battle against the Evil Galactic Empire, rather than telling a story about what happens before that fight really begins, or after it has concluded.

Developments at Edge Studio

After a considerable hiatus in which little news was forthcoming, there are now updates on the Edge Studio website regarding the Star Wars RPG. For now, they are rereleasing the books created by Fantasy Flight Games, for the three thematically different RPG lines. Here are links to the pages that have the books, along with the free downloads.

Star Wars RPG Maps Compilation

Since we're in a bit of a hiatus with the RPG--with Edge Studio having taken over, but no information yet about what they intend to do with the license--I haven't been to active in my Star Wars writing. Even so, I did decide to make a compilation of maps, for use with any incarnation of the game.

Resources for the d6 Star Wars RPG

With Fantasy Flight Games transferring control of the Star Wars RPG lines to Edge Studio, we find ourselves in some all-too-familiar territory. Back in 1999, with the premiere of The Phantom Menace, West End Games lost the RPG rights, leading to a hiatus at a time when there was plenty of new content being created. Similarly, the d20-based RPG from Wizards of the Coast ran steadily for ten years, but came to an end when the Saga Edition line was finished in 2010. At that time, the Clone Wars movie had been released to theaters, and the animated series based on it was exploring that time period. Fantasy Flight Games would bring out its own RPG in 2012-13, but after eight years of it, we once again do not have a game in print--in spite of the fact that the live-action TV series are about to explode with new content.

All of this has me looking at my Star Wars shelves, thinking about adventures and campaigns, and wondering just which rules I want to use. For that reason I've been digging into resources for the old d6 System, and decided to share a list here for anyone who might be interested. I will continue to update this list as I find new things.

Compiled Resources for the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars RPGs

I started this blog nearly eight years ago, when Fantasy Flight Games had just released the Edge of the Empire RPG. About the same time I started a thread on their message boards to compile resources that were shared by other enthusiasts. That eventually grew to be pretty long, and was even pinned by the board moderators. Seeing as those message boards have now been shut down, as part of the Star Wars RPG transferring to Edge Studio, I figure it's appropriate to transfer that information here. I might dig through and clean up these listings, but for now here they are in a rather rough fashion.

FFG SWRPG Compiled Resources List

This list includes supplements, adventures and other resources created by fans for use with the Star Wars roleplaying games from Fantasy Flight Games—Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny. I am moving a copy of it to this blog because the FFG online forum is scheduled to close after 31 January 2021. Please feel free to copy this information to other websites, too, so that it is not lost.

The FFG SWRPG Forum Is Closing

This is sad news, but not much of a surprise. I'm still not sure what is going to happen with the Star Wars RPG as Fantasy Flight Games is transferring development of roleplaying games to a new company, but they have announced that the online forum will close after 31 January 2021. For that reason, I'll be transferring the Compiled Resources Thread that I started there onto this blog over the next month.

Wroshyr Trees of Kashyyyk

Here's my first bit of useful content in quite some time.

-Nate

The Wroshyr Tree
The very center of most settlements on Kashyyyk are the massive wroshyr trees, a towering form of local plant life that rises hundreds of meters up from ground level, creating living space for the Wookiees on their higher branches and leaving much of what lies beneath in darkness. Indeed, Wookiee architectural style is such that it works with the features of the tree, rather than replacing the existing natural elements. For example, landing pads for airspeeders and starships are built onto relatively flat branches, especially where boughs come together to create broad, open areas. Similarly, typical Wookiee domiciles fit into niches, with support structure added as needed, but removing as little as possible. For example, the map above depicts part of one such tree, with a single landing platform and three houses. Note that the circle in the center of the tree represents the average circumference of its central trunk, although this is never quite so regular in shape as would seem to be indicated.

A typical Wookiee dwelling is surrounded by a covered walkway, allowing the inhabitants to enter or exit from various directions (A). There is often a common room (B), where members of the family or friends can relax and enjoy each other's company. In the center of the structure a spiral staircase (C) provides access to the upper level. A utility room (D) could feature storage space, work tables and the home's refresher units. Meals are taken in the dining room (E), and prepared in the kitchen (F), which boasts dry and cold storage areas. Bedrooms are located on the upper level (G).

What most beings—and especially the Imperials—don't know is that the Wookiees have managed to dig tunnels through the living limbs of certain wroshyr trees, thus creating hiding places for materials as well as routes for secret travel. Many of these are accessible via the spiral staircases of Wookiee homes; they have secret viewports for looking outside, along with broad passages that permit travelers to move equipment and supplies freely.

Star Wars: The High Republic

The announcement by Lucasfilm of details regarding Project Luminous--now formally known as The High Republic--is an intriguing one, especially given that the future of the roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games is up in the air.

Report #9: Galactic Reconnaissance

Following the Battle of Endor, it's crucial that the New Republic can find and deal with any remnants of the New Order. To that end, an old Rebel base—Tierfon Outpost—has been reorganized as the staging point for a squadron of Y-Wing A4 recon fighters, ones whose sole purpose is to seek out the remaining Imperial forces. Detailed below are some of the beings tasked with that mission.

Using this Report in a Star Wars RPG Campaign
There are many ways in which the details from this report can be used in adventures and campaigns, including the following possibilities.
  • The PCs could be recon pilots themselves, tasked with investigating an area of interest designated by New Republic Intelligence.
  • In that case, it could be a good chance for the GM to use the Star Warriors or X-Wing games, requiring the PCs to reach a certain location on the map to gain the required information before escaping and jumping to hyperspace.
  • Astromech droids carrying vital information have sometimes been known to jettison themselves from fighters that were about to be destroyed.
  • Of course, intelligence gained by recon pilots could be fodder for all manner of RPG scenarios, providing the starting point for a Special Operations team to investigate.

Report #8: Archives from the Church of the Force

<Note: This report is only available to those who have the highest security clearance.>

The defeat of Imperial leadership at the Battle of Endor has provided a new glimmer of hope for those beings who want to study the way of the Force, since the threat of persecution for doing so is lessened. Indeed, there have been rumblings of a group known as the Church of the Force, beings who revere such mysticism whether or not they have aptitude for wielding it. To that end, this report introduces a special agent, Chonta Veleb, who has studied these matters and will offer insight into the various ways in which this energy field manifests itself throughout the galaxy.

Chonta Veleb was raised on an Outer Rim planet and grew up hearing stories about members of the Jedi Order and others who wielded the power of the Force. Although she had to keep her affinity for that subject a secret for much of her life, the defeat of the Galactic Empire at the Battle of Endor now allows her to investigate the Force more openly, and to share what she has learned with others with the same interests.

Report #7: The Akiva Incident

What follows is a brief summary of the recent events on Akiva, which mark a first major victory for the fledgling New Republic.
-Vor Sendalin, New Republic Intelligence Operative

Akiva—Overview
This planet lies in the region of space close to Tatooine and Geonosis. It is a relatively small world; its terrain consists chiefly of sprawling mountain ranges swathed in jungle, with rivers connecting the lakes that have formed around them, and some ocean. The weather tends toward hot and humid, and is known for powerful storms known as mausim that arise during the transition from dry season to rainy, and can last for days or even weeks.

Local Government
The capital city of Akiva, Myrra, was home to the palace of Satrap Isstra Dirus. While nominally a part of the Galactic Empire, it had for decades been more of a world for visiting officers who sought rest and (sometimes illicit) relaxation, rather than a world with a strong rank-and-file military presence. That all changed, however, when the Imperial Embassy took place there a few months ago (see below).

Criminal Underworld
Kingpin of illegal activities on the planet is a Sullustan named Surat Nuat. He is known to run a gambling den in Myrra, and to deal in the spice trade and slavery. What is more, Nuat was known to have possessed a considerable amount of secret information, which was acquired by the beings who would come to form Halo Team and subsequently turned over to New Republic Intelligence.

According to reports, there's also an abandoned C.I.S. droid factory in the tunnels beneath Myrra. It is not currently know what that facility might contain, but there were also claims that semi-sentient creatures known as Uugteen live in that area, donning old pieces of battle droids like clothing and attacking anyone who ventures into their territory.

Imperial Embassy
It was Captain Wedge Antilles who first discovered the gathering of Imperials on Akiva, and Lieutenant Norra Wexley who helped rescue him and expose what was happening there to the rest of the galaxy. Included among the Imperial visitors were the broker Arsin Crassus, General Jylia Shale, Moff Valco Pandion, Advisor Yupe Tashu, and Admiral Rae Sloane. In the aftermath, Pandion and Crassus were killed, Tashu and Shale captured, but Sloane escaped.

Using this Report in a Star Wars RPG Campaign
There are many ways in which the details from this report can be used in adventures and campaigns, including the following.
  • The fact that Surat Nuat has been deposed provides an excellent opportunity to free former slaves from their captivity.
  • Since Satrap Isstra has been deposed, and Akiva has joined the New Republic, agents of that government could help the locals elect new leaders. Such changes never go as smoothly as one might hope, however.
  • While unlikely, it is possible that secrets from the Confederacy of Independent Systems back during the Clone Wars can still be found in the tunnels beneath the city.
  • Since it is also known that members of the Jedi Order fought on Akiva, it's also possible that they could have left behind items of value.
